Rescue Me ID: 18-01-15-00010Mikie (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Mikie was born in a home outside of Monroe, AL. His mom is a black Lab mix, and we suspect his dad may be a smaller breed dog. He has 6 siblings and spent the first 6-7 weeks nursing and being cared for by his mom. A neighbor volunteers at the local shelter and told us about the pups. Once they were weaned she took over their care by fostering them until they were old enough to travel to us. Thanks to her hard work, the pups have received lots of love and are up to date on their vaccinations. Mikie is estimated to be 9 weeks old and he weighs 10.5 lbs. He is working on his house breaking and crate training skills - and is at the perfect ... (Read More)age to master them. We do not provide DNA testing which is the only way to know with certainty which breeds are included in Mikie's family tree. We know mom is a Lab mix, and a Boxer mix & Jack Russell Terrier mix live nearby - but this is only a guess. Based on his current size and rate of growth, we expect him to reach 45-50 pounds as an adult. - Enjoys playing with other dogs - Up-to-date on vaccines - Snuggly & Affectionate - Eager to learn - Happy & Friendly - Has NOT been Neutered * * Based on current veterinary recommendations, these pups have not been spayed or neutered due to their young age. We do require proof of this procedure at a later date as part of the terms of our Adoption Agreement. Please discuss the correct time for this to be done with your veterinarian. We can provide a $75 rebate once the procedure is completed. Our adoption fee is $350 which includes age appropriate vaccines (such as Distemper, Bordetella, Parvo, Rabies), worming, micro- chipping, and health exam. Discount vouchers for training, grooming and similar dog related products and services are provided. (Less)

Animal ID: 1586Vixen (female)

Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This is our lovely, Vixen! Vixen came to us at just 10 weeks old from a very high intake/high kill shelter in south Texas. When she first arrived she was terrified and timid, and it has been so rewarding to watch this sweet girl flourish into the confident puppy she is today. Vixen is now estimated to be around 13-14 weeks old and weighs a little over 8lbs. Vixen is completely kennel trained, and completely house trained when kept on a schedule. She loves playing with her foster brothers and sisters, enjoys playing with her toys and tennis balls, and she also likes running around the back yard and playing in the leaves. She does very well ... (Read More)sleeping in her kennel, but she would prefer to sleep where she can see her human and maybe even share a tiny corner of their bed. She was diagnosed with a heart murmur when she initially came to us, and further testing revealed that she does have a ventricular septal defect. It is considered a small defect at this time and does not require any surgery or medication, but will need to be monitored. We have attached a link with further information on this for anyone interested in adoption. Vixen has all age appropriate vaccinations, has been initiated on heartworm medications and is microchipped. She is ready for adoption and we are so excited to help her find the perfect family! http://www.vssstl.com/wp-cont'|/uploads/'|/10/VSDs-in-Dogs.pdf If you think your family would be a good fit for Vixen please fill out an application at http://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application His adoption fee is $535 and all proceeds from his adoption go towards future rescues. Rescue Me ID: 18-01-12-00240Dashacross 'Dash' (male)

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Dash is a heroic pup who had a rough start at the hands of a bad owner who almost starved him to death. Rescued at four months by a local no-kill shelter in Southwest Virginia, he had very extensive, excellent veterinary and foster care that brought him to the peak of health and, as you can see, to a wonderful state of mind. After five months of home-based foster care with loving, very-experienced caretakers, Dash is currently in a top-flight private residential boarding facility (ends mid-March 2018) where he enjoys a climate-controlled cabin and acres of exercise space, organic and supplemented diet, plenty of socialization with other ... (Read More)well-behaved dogs, professional training and a whole crew of dedicated human handlers. Dash is a happy, energetic 10 m/o pup who enjoys other dogs, well-behaved children, plenty of exercise in wide-open spaces, new experiences outdoors (especially running up and down steep places), toys with squeakers or plenty of floppiness, interactive games, and talking with humans (he really does 'talk'). He has some lingering concerns about strange or loud noises and certain human-body language, but is easily reassured with kind words and strokes. He appreciates having his human kneel next to him and 'explain' what's happening in new or scary situations. He also will join right into the merriment if his human makes light of sudden, startling bangs/crashes with a silly song and/or lighthearted 'OOPSY-DAISY' tones! Because of his early experiences, Dash is extremely sensitive to human tone and body language--and angry attitudes upset him greatly. But his high intelligence and superb care have made it possible for him to move on, and with continued good handling, he will be able to realize his full potential as an ideal companion to some lucky family. So,the bottom line is that Dash needs an upbeat, gentle, fun-loving household with plenty of good will, laughter and love of exercise. He's a snuggler par excellence when he feels safe and secure, and is delighted when his human responds to his 'let's play' overtures. His current training is focused on consistency of obedience (overcoming his puppy distractibility), basic commands, good leash manners and extending his 'hold' time for toileting. Someone out there will find a treasure when they adopt this pup. He's a true hero and smart as a whip to boot! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-01-11-00406Leia (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Leia is a 38 pound, 6 year old mixed breed pup who loves her people and enjoys walks and hikes. She's a bit of a loner, and we feel she would do best as an only dog in her home, although she is perfectly fine meeting other dogs outside of her home. She's lived with cats and done very well with them, and she might be alright with high school aged children, but no small kids for Leia. She much prefers a calm and quiet house. Leia is house trained, crate trained, and walks well on a leash. She's been trained to an E Collar with Vermont Dog Pack, and the trainer at Vermont Dog Pack is willing to give a free lesson to Leia's new owners, so they ... (Read More)can learn how to use the E Collar in a safe and constructive way. Leia is perfectly content to lounge around the house during the day. She is a medium to low energy girl, so she's good to rest and she's good to play when the time comes. Leia takes time to get comfortable with strangers, but we are confident that an confident dog owner would be able to help Leia overcome some of these fears. She has participated in pack walks at VT dog Pack and done very well with everyone she meets. Rhonda says she is one of her best students! She's a very friendly, affectionate, eager to please girl who just needs a few boundaries and some structure from someone so that the she learns she doesn't have to be the house guard dog! She's not overly vocal, but she will bark at strangers. Leia may take a little time to get comfortable and adjusted in her new home, but we know she will make a wonderful companion! Feist Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi, my name is Maisy. I am already house-trained, crate trained, spayed, up to date on shots, microchipped and although a bit timid at first I love everyone I meet! I am a happy girl and have gained much of my confidence from the other dogs in the home. Could you be my lucky forever family? Maisy is an adorable Feist mix weighing 30 pounds. She is such a sweet, intelligent dog with so much potential for the right family. She loves affection and cuddling with her foster family, especially the children. Maisy is a quiet girl, who seldom barks. Much like the cowardly lion, Maisy would not make a good guard dog . . . .she's afraid of the ... (Read More)dark, the sound of the brook, rain, falling apples and the cat in the kitty litter commercial - but she would love to be protected from all that by someone who loves her. Maisy adores children, is great with other dogs, with cats and with chickens. Maisy knows to play gentle with the smaller dogs and rougher with the larger dogs. Maisy already knows basic commands. She loves her toys and relaxing in her crate. Maisy would do best in a home with another dog for a companion and role model as she is still working on her confidence. Any family would be so lucky to adopt this wonderful girl but they will need to be patient with Maisy until she settles in. Pit Bull Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Most Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Pepper Ann. No, not the animated character from the late 90s cartoon for children. Sure, that Pepper was 'too cool for seventh grade,' but our Pepper Ann truly is, 'like one in a million!' Pepper Ann is a 34lb 2 year old female American pit bull Terrier mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Pepper Ann is housetrained and crate-trained. She was walks well on leash and knows: Sit, Come and Let's Go! She enjoys spending time outdoors weather-permitting. And, when it's too cold outside, she is content to play with her toys or cuddle with her person. She is a very sweet girl. Pepper Ann is not interested in the cats that she ... (Read More)lives with. And, she gets along well with the other dog, for the most part-once in a while they 'grumble' at each other over a toy or treat. Pepper Ann has not met any children, but she greets new adults without issue. Pepper Ann is affectionate, eager to please, joyful, playful and well-behaved. Sometimes, she's 'chill' Pepper Ann and sometimes she's 'red-hot chili' Pepper Ann. Chill Pepper Ann, appreciates lying in the warm spot, the comfort of pillows and affectionate snuggles on the couch with her person. Chili Pepper Ann is a riot to watch. Give her a ball and she behaves like a cat, batting it about with her paws. But, it's the way she jumps up in the air with all four feet and spins around, that is most impressive. Now that winter snow packs the ground, she has discovered that she can 'spin out,' and 'do-donuts.' Pepper Ann, she's like one in million! Staffordshire Bull Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

The name Mia, has two meanings, 'beloved' and 'my'or 'mine.' Mia is a 40lb 17 month-old female Terrier mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Mia is housetrained and crate trained. She was fine being left in the crate when her person was out, but she has slowly been trusted with free run of the house. She is currently left for up to 6 hours home alone without incident. Mia is affectionate, eager to please, joyful, playful, well-behaved and puppy-like. She knows 'Sit' and 'Down,' and is learning, 'Wait' and 'Come.' Mia loves to chase balls and will even bring them back . . . but, she would rather not let them go to be thrown, ... (Read More)again! Mia walks well on leash. She now walks with a 'Halti' lead. Mia loves walks. She whines a little at first because she is so happy and excited. Mia is smart and responsive with a strong desire to please. She attends Upbeat K9 to work on dog socialization and learn how to play. She has done very well and would benefit from continued training in this program or other obedience training and regular work with her adopter to build on her skills and develop a trusting bond. Mia currently lives with one other dog. After a slow, five-day introduction, they get along well together. Mia has not met any cats. She doesn't live with children, but she has spent time with her foster mom's 8-year-old grandson and was fine with him. She is initially excited to meet new people, but will sit and receive pats when given the opportunity. Mia's high energy, intelligence and willingness to please, will make someone a loyal hiking or running partner. Mia is not all, go-go-go, she has a quiet cuddly side too. When you are ready to kick back on the couch and chill, Mia is, too. In fact her favorite place to snuggle is on the couch, with her head resting in your lap. What could be better than that? Mia wants someone to call her 'my beloved.' We bet she will have you singing, 'Mamma Mia! Here I go again, my-my how can I resist ya?' Australian Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Treble is a 2 year old male, Australian Shepherd/springer spaniel mix. Although he's still underweight, he's eating like a champ and he's big in stature. He's around 50 pounds now and could stand to gain another 15-20 to really fill out his frame. Treble has greatly benefited from having Beau around, our 10 year old chocolate lab. They were instantly friendly with each other, and Treble gained a sense of safety and comfort from Beau. He has been fine with our two children, but sometimes he shies away from their loud/busy actions. He also was not bothered by having a cat around. He likes a calm, quiet environment, but he also loved ... (Read More)bounding around in the fresh snow! He is great walking on a leash. He sometimes resists being approached to be leashed, but as soon as he is leashed, he is completely submissive and calm. He is sometimes hesitant to come back inside after being let out. He has chewed through a few leashes/ropes while tied up outside, but does well with a fenced in area. He sleeps in his crate and would greatly benefit from having something rugged to chew on during his stretches of boredom while alone. He is up to date with his vaccinations and is currently on heartgard and nexgard monthly. He has been eating roughly 4 cups of food a day, with many treats as well. Although he is being fed a lot, he will still help himself to something tasty that has been left unattended. Treble is a beautiful dog, who could make a great companion. I believe he would do well somewhere with lots of acreage, or a large fenced in yard. A calm, not too rowdy setting with another dog to befriend would be ideal. A family who is willing to take the time to be patient with Treble, and allow him to become comfortable at his own pace and eventually open up socially. German Shepherd Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Zena, Warrior Princess, in training . . . Zena is a 40lb 4 %BD year-old female Shepherd-mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Zena is a quiet, contemplative, well-behaved, and affectionate, but shy and skittish dog. Zena languished in the kennel of an animal shelter for over 6 months. Repeatedly being passed by due to her shy quiet nature. But this wallflower is beginning to blossom in her new foster home where she lives with an adult, one cat and one dog. There are no children in her foster home, and small children would likely startle her. But older well-behaved children should be fine. Zena seems to be a deep-thinker and ... (Read More)assesses situations. She is housetrained, knows, 'Come,' and 'Go Potty' is working on learning additional language/commands. She seems to have had no prior leash training. So, her foster mom is using a training-collar with her because she tends to pull and easily startles. Indoors, Zena is trusted with free-roam, but also has a crate, which she often sleeps in. When her person is home, she enjoys sitting next to her on the sofa, being petted and even giving occasional kisses. She is non-reactive with the cat and doesn't even try to steal her food. She's not yet playing with the other dog, but she shares toys easily and has zero food aggression. Although, she may harbor some ill will towards squeaky-toys, and she is very adept in separating each squeaker from its toy. Like a hidden door to a secret garden, Zena's soul awaits unlocking. Anyone reading this note could hold the key! It is not so mysterious. All is takes is patience and kindness, consistency and trust. Zena will never be fierce like a warrior, nor should she. However, she has the potential to be fiercely loving and fiercely loyal to the one who unlocks her heart. Rescue Me ID: 17-09-04-00021Dana (female)

Flat-Coated Retriever Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dana is a beautiful 40 pound retriever mix. She was listed as a one year old, and from what the foster parents initially observed, did not appear to have had much structure or guidance. Dana is a smart girl, and so eager to learn and please, which has made her time at the foster home extremely productive and gratifying. Nothing makes Dana happier then to have a job; she's all focus. She is a high energy pup who is up for any adventure and will do best with daily exercise. She loves a good game of fetch, and has been enjoying her daily swims in the river. She can tend to be highly excitable, so working and talking with her in a calming ... (Read More)manner is key. With that being said, she has made great progress in calming herself. A good bone, or squeaky toy for her to put her attention has helped. Due to Dana's energy, excitability, and strength levels, her foster parents are not thinking cats or young children are a good match for her at this time. But she has been around some older, respectful, dog savvy children, and just loves the attention. She does very well in her crate, using it at night and when she is left alone. Dana is currently residing with a 9 year old Golden Retriever, and they get along fine. Dana would most likely do best with other dogs who enjoy playing. With lower energy pups, she would need more careful introductions, as not all dogs will appreciate her joyful exuberance! Dana will grab shoes or socks for attention. Dana is working on 'leaving it,' and has made good progress. Dana is an affectionate pup who enjoys a good rub down, snuggle, or belly scratch and who loves the attention that goes with it. Day by day, Dana continues to grow into her full potential. With consistent guidance, boundaries, and direction from a confident leader, Dana will thrive and continue on to be her very best self and a wonderful companion. PIease Read Before Adopting a Mutt in Vermont
Mutt Dogs can make good pets in Vermont if they match your IifestyIe. Mutts are some of the most loveable of all the types of dogs one can adopt. What distinguishes a mutt is that they are not born from any single breed, but rather, are a mix of two or more breeds. While a mutt might not be able to be shown at an AKC show, they tend to be healthier, more secure and live longer than most purebred dogs.
